My Jewellery Journey: An Interview with Founder & Creative Director Deniz Gurdal from Ottoman Hands
Glaize has joined forces with jewellery brand Ottoman Hands, to create a collection of nail art designs inspired by the brand's east-meets-west aesthetic. We sat down with founder Deniz to discuss her journey.
1. How did you get started in the jewellery industry?
I began my journey in the jewellery industry back in 2010 when I started selling my unique jewellery designs at a humble stall on Portobello Market. Even as a market stall, Ottoman Hands stood out with eye-catching displays that even caught the attention of buyers from Topshop. It was a true labor of love, and after nearly two years of dedication, we expanded to being stocked in numerous high-street shops and museum stores across London to grow into a global brand.
2. What do you love most about your job?
What I love most about my job is the opportunity to design unique pieces that become a means for individuals to tell their own stories. Jewellery, for me, holds a special connection between the wearer and the piece itself. It brings me joy to witness this connection between our customers and the pieces I design.
3. What are the biggest challenges you face as a founder?
As the founder of an independent business, one of the most significant challenges is the constant competition from larger competitors. These big companies possess more extensive resources and can often offer lower prices due to economies of scale. Navigating this competitive landscape while preserving our unique identity, commitment to sustainability and handcrafted craftsmanship is an ongoing challenge.
4. What’s your nail care routine?
My nail care routine goes beyond just applying hand cream. It involves keeping my nails clean and well-trimmed, using nourishing cuticle oil, and providing regular breaks from nail polish to maintain their natural beauty. I also try to have a healthy balanced diet to ensure the overall health of my nails and hands, however my love of Turkish desserts doesn't make this easy sometimes!
5. What’s your favourite Glaize shade or design?
Without a doubt, my favourite Glaize shade is "Wavy Baby", and, of course our signature Evil Eye designs 🧿✨💙
